Cruelty, Neglect and Abandonment

Animal Control officers respond to and investigate cruelty, neglect and abandonment of animals. Animal ownership is a big responsibility and includes expenses that must be considered before the purchase or adoption of an animal, which is completely dependent upon its owner. Beyond the basic food, water and shelter required, considerations include veterinary care, regular health care check-ups and vaccinations. Plan for unexpected events such as injury or illness. Animal owners are responsible for all costs and care of their pets.

Another consideration is the length of time you will be responsible for your pet. Dogs and cats can live for 15 to more than 20 years. Some exotic pets, such as parrots, can live for several decades. Online searches for specific information on various types of pets will provide you with more detailed information.

If you have concerns about the care of an animal in your Lakewood neighborhood, you can report the issue to Animal Control. Lakewood Animal Control also participates in Crimestoppers. To contact Crimestoppers, call 720-913-STOP (7867).
